Municipal engineering is generally belongs to the country's infrastructure, refers to all kinds of public transportation in the urban construction, water supply, drainage, gas, urban flood control, environmental health and lighting and other infrastructure construction, is the material basis for the survival and development is indispensable, the city is to improve people's living standards and the basic conditions of opening to the outside world.

After the reform and opening up, the experts on urban issues proposed to replace the term "municipal engineering facilities" with urban infrastructure, which was generally recognized by the society.

Municipal engineering refers to urban public utility projects such as urban roads, Bridges, water supply and drainage, sewage treatment, urban flood control, gardens, road greening, street lamps and environmental sanitation.
 
1. Road traffic engineering. Such as roads, overpasses, plazas, traffic facilities, railways and subways and other rail transit facilities.
 
2. River and lake water system engineering. Such as river, bridge, diversion (drainage) channel, drainage and irrigation pump station, gate bridge and other hydraulic structures.
 
3. Underground pipeline engineering. For common water supply, drainage (including drainage, sewage) power supply, communication, gas supply, heating part of the pipeline and special purpose underground pipelines and civil air defense channels.
 
4. Overhead line project. Power supply poles, communication poles, trackless poles and overhead pipelines of different voltage grades.
 
5. Street greening project. Street trees, shrubs, lawns, green pieces (such as street greening in the rockery, veranda, easel, pool, fountain, etc.) buildings, structures in the main part of the municipal professional engineering field (factory), stations, points.
